On the road

You are stopping over in

Vermilion, Ohio,

poetry capital

of the United States.

Everything is dappled

here, a shimmer

between one thing

and the other.

In Vermilion

you can watch the artisans

in their studios.

One guy builds poems

to shelter in

simple and welcoming

as a child’s game.

Another makes matchbox poems,

multi-coloured vehicles

for tiny minds. They whizz

about, doing wheelies

tearing up the sandpit.

Up the road you can hear

that the woman who makes

explosions is at work,

her poems like windows

in a bomb blast. Her partner

knits lines of tangled red wool.
